Soothing Spaces: The Ensuite Shower Room in an Edwardian Loft Conversion

K Space Interiors has transformed a traditional townhouse into a haven of contemporary loft living. This loft conversion in Brockley showcases a seamless blend of form and function, marrying natural materials with thoughtful design to create a space that is both inspirational and practical. We spoke with Krystyna Martin-Dominguez of K Space Interiors to understand more about her design process,

A Perfect Balance: Form and Function

Krystyna's approach blends old with new, solving spatial challenges with creative solutions and investing in traditional craftsmanship. She champions sustainable design, incorporating natural materials into her designs “We specialize in creating inspirational and functional spaces in London, focusing on natural materials and seamlessly blending form with function, our studio handles everything from large-scale builds to bijou renovations, emphasizing the unique character of each project within its locale. We’re concept-driven and detail-oriented, we prioritize texture—both architectural and decorative—infusing earthy materiality into our designs. Collaborating closely with clients, we uncover their tastes and visions, guiding informed decisions to craft carefully considered, beautiful spaces that enhance daily life.”

The Key to Successful Bathroom Design

When designing bathrooms Krystyna’s approach is to create beautiful yet practical and easy-to-maintain spaces “I collaborate closely with my clients to ensure that, by the end of the process, they have bathrooms they truly want to spend time in. At the start, these bathrooms are often the ugliest and most uncomfortable spaces in the house—cold, damp, and poorly laid out. By the time we finish, my clients never want to leave the room!”

“My design process is fundamentally centred on client collaboration, meticulous space planning, thoughtful material selection, and unwavering attention to detail in execution. Bathrooms are often the smallest yet most crucial spaces in a home. They demand particular focus due to their high refurbishment costs, the discomfort they cause during updates, and their expected lifespan of 15-20 years. The pressure to get them right is immense, as mistakes can be very costly. Investing in quality labour and the best products you can afford is key, as these aspects ensure longevity.

The Flor Basin by Kast: A Design Highlight

When designing this space, the primary goal was to create a luxurious en-suite shower room within an Edwardian loft conversion. The size and shape of the basin were crucial to the overall design, aiming to maximize functionality and incorporate useful storage while fitting within the space constraints.

The selection of the Flor basin was driven by its ability to complement the room's soft industrial feel, adding a touch of elegance and practicality to the carefully curated design. “Flor is my favourite basin design by Kast.

I adore the extra space/shelf on the basin and appreciate the benefit of not seeing the waste. Its simple yet luxurious appearance captures the soft industrial feel that I consistently incorporate into my designs. I also love its compact width (350mm), perfect for pairing with wall-mounted reduced-length spouts. Despite fitting it into the most challenging and small spaces, the basin always feels spacious and luxurious.”

Krystyna Martin-Dominguez shares Ash is one of her favourite Kast colours, “I like to stay true to the materials I use and Ash retains the concrete aesthetic while being lighter, which works beautifully for modern installations. I love using natural materials such as concrete, brass, and plaster, embracing their authentic textures.”

“Unlike some other concrete basins on the market, Flor is not only beautifully designed and high quality but also easy to install and care for—an aspect I value deeply.”
