A Sanctuary At Home: Emily Rickard’s Bathroom Retreat

Interior designer Emily Rickard is no stranger to travel. With a life spent between Europe, America and South Asia, her work often brings a beautiful combination of global influences. Her latest bathroom project, featuring our beautiful Aura basin, immerses us in a deep sense of calm, escapism and natural elegance. We spoke to Emily about the story behind this design and how Kast played a part in shaping it.

I really wanted my bathroom to transport myself and my guests away somewhere”, she tells us. “Somewhere still, zen yet breathtaking”.

And it is breathtaking! Warm lighting, muted finishes, and tactile materials bring a sense of softness and peace. The curves of our Aura basin reinforce the calm, flowing lines of this stunning space, gently becoming a confident centrepiece. Its pill shape sits beautifully in contrast to the straight lines of the furniture, softening the overall look. The built-in shelf detail adds a layer of practicality and charm, one of the reasons Emily chose it.

My bathroom is not huge, so I had to be space conscious”, she explains. “The lovely pill shape of the Aura on top of a rectangular dresser is a nice mix. Plus, I love the shelf detail.

With a beautiful combination of earthy tones, natural textures and matt finishes, this space becomes a nurturing sanctuary. Marble, bejmat tiles and wood, all make an appearance, adding different layers of interest without overwhelming the eye. Our Aura, cast in Wheat, is the perfect finishing touch.

I knew I wanted a soft, calm space”, says Emily. “The mix of natural materials brings the space back to nature. Choosing a neutral colour for the basin and in a matt concrete finish added the perfect final layer.

This is not just a bathroom, it’s a personal retreat. A quiet moment of luxury drawing inspiration from the Mediterranean escapes. “I wanted it to feel like you were stepping out of an inner-city home and into a five-star eco resort”, Emily shares. “That sense of serenity, being surrounded by natural beauty, that’s what I wanted people to experience.

When we asked what she’d say to anyone considering a Kast basin, she didn’t hesitate:

Do it!! They are so unique and gorgeous. I love all the colours and I really feel they add that special touch. Just make sure your installers know about the weight well in advance ;)

As designers and homeowners continue to prioritise meaningful, long-lasting, slow design, this project is a reminder that small spaces can still tell big stories. And sometimes, all it takes is one beautiful basin to set the tone for a whole new experience.
